Not getting enough Sleep? You might be accelerating aging.

June 18, 2015

As you age, even a night of insufficient sleep shows on your skin, which sags, bags, and dulls the complexion. Insomnia can make a person look years older because of stress-induced changes in facial tissue. The term “beauty sleep” is more than an expression.

Everyone looks better after a good night’s sleep, which is backed by science. As the body settles into the deepest stage of rest, growth hormones peak and stimulate cell and tissue repair. Without enough deep sleep, the repair process of your skin will be slowed, resulting in aging.

Sleep deprivation can cause skin damage at a number of levels. It can raise the cortisol levels hence it can worsen inflammatory conditions. Poor collagen formation also takes place with sleep deprivation leading to skin aging.

In addition there is increased oxidative stress at cellular level and the accumulation of the ‘oxidative stress’ can lead to poor skin quality and premature aging with poor quality skin. Poor lymphatic drainage and fluid accumulation leads to puffy eyes or the appearance of dark circles around the eyes.

Tips for a good night’s sleep

When you haven’t had enough sleep, the delicate skin around your eyes will look tired and develop a few little extra lines. When people are really worn out skin can looks dull. Try to stay hydrated. Sleep is as important to your health as a good diet and keeping fit.

  • Switch off all screens such as the TV and my mobile at least an hour before you go to bed. It will clear your head and allow you to focus on unwinding.
  • If you go to bed stressed or without a clear head your sleep suffers. Suggestions to relieve pre bed time stress: burn a scented candle while reading, or take a bath. Drinking herbal tea such as camomile also works.
  • If you live in a noisy environment use ear plugs and an eye mask. They are essential when staying or living in loud city centers.
